More fun than giving blood

“Oh boy, we’re going to a sperm bank! I can’t think of a better way to pep up a slow day!”

With this month’s theme being embrace curiosity, I wanted a spectacular example from The Golden Girls to demonstrate how we can meet the new, unfamiliar or sometimes scary with curiosity instead of straight up rejecting it right off the bat.

What better episode to demonstrate curiosity than The Accurate Conception?

Non-GG fans - this is all you need to know: Blanche's daughter reveals that she plans to have a baby by artificial insemination. They take a field trip to a sperm bank so that Blanche’s daughter, Rebecca, can find out more information. The rest of the Girls are open to it. Blanche does not understand Rebecca’s decision and her automatic reaction is to reject it.

Boom. Now you're caught up.

“I bet this is more fun than giving blood.”

“I bet this is more fun than giving blood.”

People often have this knee-jerk reaction when it comes to myriad things; Atheism, political views, polyamory, bisexuality, etc. If it does not align with their belief system, culture or challenges what they’ve come to “know” to be true, sometimes people will just reject it.

Perhaps one way to approach something new is just to let curiosity take over for a minute. If you find yourself rejecting an idea, concept or belief you don’t need to throw your own to the wind and accept the new one. However, maybe just take a second to legitimately think, Huh. This is interesting. I wonder what this is about.

I’ve mentioned before that I frequently find myself drawn to people who are not like me in a lot of ways. It’s not so much that I actively seek out these folx, but I find myself more drawn to their human experiences because I don’t have them. Whether I’ve taken a job working with folx who are some combination of Deafblind and developmentally disabled with behavioral issues, binge-watch shows about drug addicts or apply to jobs that primarily do work for marginalized groups it’s the most natural feeling in the world for me. The only thing I can come up with is that I’m often curious about things I know either nothing or very little about.

Why wouldn’t I want to know more or better understand people who are not like me?

And if there’s ever something I don’t know about and don’t want to know more about, I usually meet it with a neutral reaction. For example, some people have a really strong fascination with HVAC technology. Like, a really strong fascination with it. It gets them up in the morning, they could talk about it for days and quite frankly, it razzes their berries like crazy.

That’s great! Razz those berries all day long, y’all!

However, I could not put into words the amount of apathy I feel about HVAC technology. Does that mean it doesn’t have value in general? Nope. It just means that I personally don’t have a passion for it and that’s okay too. That’s also why I don’t pass any type of judgement pertaining to it as a topic or anyone with an interest in it.

So what I’m saying, y’all, is pep up your day! Does that require you to visit a sperm bank? Maybe it does or maybe it doesn’t - you do you, boo! You never know what you may unexpectedly find that will be a great source of razzing!

With warmth and gusto,

H
